The Primary Series is called Yoga Chikitsa or yoga therapy for the body, mind, and spirit. It is designed to realign the spine and build strength, flexibility, and stamina. The method of practice taught in Ashtanga yoga involves linking the breath and movement with a progressively challenging series of postures. This produces an intense internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies the muscles and organs. It is a vigorous moving mediation that helps to develop a strong body and calm mind.
During this class, you will be led through the poses of the Primary Series as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Students will progress through the series according to their familiarity and proficiency in the practice. This individualized approach allows the Primary Series to be accessible to most people.
This class is appropriate for anyone who is working toward the full Primary Series. In observance of the Ashtanga tradition, there is no practice on moon days.
Primary Series is appropriate for:
- Students with previous Ashtanga experience in Mysore style or led Half Primary classes wishing to experience the full primary series.
- All levels of Ashtanga practitioners, except for new beginners.
