There are many ways you can learn yoga as a beginner at Yoga on High. We recommend (but do not require) you start with one of our 9-week or 6-week Series Classes for beginners. These series classes are courses especially designed for those who have never practiced yoga, are new to a vigorous practice like Ashtanga or who have stopped practicing for a while and need a refresher. There are beginner courses of varying levels of difficulty so that everyone can approach yoga in the best way for their own body. You will learn the basic principles, techniques, and poses of yoga with plenty of personal attention. We also encourage longtime yoga practitioners to occasionally try beginner classes to continue to build upon their fundamental learning of yoga.
9-Week Beginner Series Classes
Starting in order from the least vigorous to the most vigorous:
Basic Beginner Hatha: This class is appropriate for most people. It includes warm-ups, sun salutations, floor poses and standing poses, all taught with a focus on alignment and relaxation. Also included is training in simple powerful yogic breath practices. For this class you must be able to get up and down off the floor, but may have other health considerations such as back or neck discomfort.
Dynamic Beginner Hatha: This class is appropriate for beginners without health issues like back pain or shoulder injuries and are looking for a more vigorous yoga experience. All categories of poses are included, along with relaxation and breath training. Poses are held longer than in Basic Beginners and transitions may be faster. While basic sequences are repeated frequently enough to learn them, each class offers new poses and pose sequences.
6-Week Foundations Classes
Ashtanga Foundations: Ashtanga is the most vigorous practice we offer at Yoga on High. A traditional system, you will learn the same breath-based flow of poses that is practiced world-wide. You’ll work in a room heated to 80 degrees to warm muscles and to encourage deep cleansing through sweating. Ashtanga is physically challenging, however your teacher will present the poses first in a modified form so that this practice is accessible to almost anyone willing to work hard.
Vinyasa Foundations: Learn the fundamentals of vinyasa yoga in a fun and supportive environment. In this six week beginner’s course, students will experience the practice of linking breath and movement and also attain a foundation for flowing with mindfulness and safe alignment.
The 9-week courses cost $125 and the 6-week courses cost $75. Pre-registration & payment is required and can be done online or by calling the studio. Please visit our Class Pricing and Online Store for more details. Beginners Series Classes make a great gift. We recommend purchasing a gift certificate.
