Prenatal Classes

Prenatal yoga adapts traditional yoga postures for the specific needs of pregnancy through gentle yoga movements. It also helps relieve tension and teaches you how to remain calm and balanced, important skills during labor and delivery.  This class is suitable for those with no yoga experience.  Long time yoga practitioners also find the material beneficial, though the class is not a regular yoga class with modifications for the pregnant body.

Students with a strong yoga practice may wish to continue in their regular yoga class.  If you elect to take a regular yoga class rather than a Prenatal class, please speak with your teacher to maintain a safe and healthy practice during pregnancy.

The Prenatal 10-week course includes stretching, postural alignment and breathing techniques. You will also learn specific yoga poses for addressing the discomforts of pregnancy and for building strength, flexibility and endurance. Each class will conclude with a relaxation period. You are encouraged to practice at your own level of comfort, and the teacher can help you modify any pose.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I have to have previous yoga experience? No experience required.
  • When should I start? You should be in your 2nd or 3rd trimester.
  • How should I dress for class? Wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to be in bare feet.
  • What do I bring to class? A yoga mat and a water bottle.
  • Why can’t I come to just one class instead of the series? Each class is structured so that it builds on the previous week’s content.
  • I missed the beginning of the quarter. Do you have short-run or later starting prenatal series? At times of demand, and/or during the last half of a quarter, we may offer a shorter-running Prenatal class, designed for those who have either missed the beginning of our quarter or do not have time to complete the normal 10-week course. If you are in need of such a class, please call us and we will put you on a waiting list for the next run.

Classes begin the week of January 5.

Series Class Schedule

Prenatal yoga is ideal for maintaining a sense of balance and peace during the physical and hormonal changes of pregnancy. The relaxation and awareness of the pelvis in yoga also helps in labor and delivery. I suggest it for many of my patients, particularly in first pregnancies. Yoga on High's programs are very well thought out and the instructors are always attentive to students' needs. The center is a wonderful environment in which to learn and practice yoga. - OBGYN Physician
